Pilates Classes at BAC

No matter if you’re trying to rehabilitate, healing old injuries, and relearning new habits, or if you’ve fully integrated the Pilates method into your life; Bethany Athletic Club has a Pilates class for all fitness levels.

At Bethany Athletic Club we offer a 50-minute long Reformer Pilates class. The Pilates Reformer is an exercise machine used to incorporate the Pilates exercise technique for a challenging and intense workout. Movements are performed on a machine that provides external resistance as you push, pull, and twist through the series.

During the Reformer Pilates class, you will follow a series of moves to open, lengthen and strengthen your feet, legs, glutes, hips, shoulders, back, and arms- all the while engaging the core to stay stable and balanced. It truly is a full-body workout routine.

What are the Benefits of Pilates?

Pilates Reformer offers all the benefits of Pilates including overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance.

  • Strength – Proper form and technique is essential to exercising on the Pilates Reformer. The focus of proper positioning is within the core, your abdomen and lower back muscles.

  • Flexibility – Exercises on the Pilates Reformer require your muscle groups to move through a full range of motion. Flexibility improves muscle coordination, mobility, and posture. Reduces the risk of injuries, muscle stiffness, and soreness.

  • Coordination – The key to the way the Pilates exercises flow is coordination, it concentrates on working the body as a whole instead of individual parts.

  • Balance – You will challenge your stabilizing muscles in new ways and lower the risk of falls.

Can beginners do Pilates?

Absolutely! Anyone can join a Pilates class and get a great workout. At Bethany Athletic Club, our instructors are very experienced and can modify the workout to suit you. We recommend coming to the pilates studio ten minutes before class so that the instructor can help fit the reformer to your body.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a method of Pilates where exercises and movements are done using a reformer machine versus a mat. The Reformer was invented by Joseph Pilates and is a piece of equipment that uses springs and resistances to make a Pilates workout more dynamic and intense, as well as, assists in reaching proper muscle length and properly doing the Pilates exercises.

What does Pilates do?

While Pilates is most certainly a workout, it’s also a healing modality. This means that Pilates is a fantastic type of conditioning exercise- exercise that prevents injury. Pilates protects your body from injury because it focuses on improving alignment and core strength, which is only magnified by the mind and body connection that’s developed through regular practice.

Pilates is in a unique position to help people rehabilitate from injuries because it emphasizes proper alignment, strengthening and stretching of muscles, and balancing the body symmetrically left to right. Not only that, but Pilates also relieves dominant muscles of their tension by allowing postural and core muscles to bear more of the load when it comes to supporting the body and its movements.
